An Interview with Jim Root

The BLLA Events Team sits down with Jim Root, General Manager/Director of Wellbeing at Mii amo and Enchantment Group as he prepares to speak at the 2021 Boutique Lifestyle Leadership Conference on October 25-26.

How did you enter the hospitality industry?

I literally grew up in it as the oldest of 10 kids, graduated from the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration and followed my dad’s path. Along the way, I had a very serendipitous opportunity to live and work at Rancho La Puerta where my professional and personal lives came together and have always believed that Wellbeing/Spa is the ultimate evolution of hospitality.

I try to redirect descriptions of “ the Hospitality Industry or Spa Industry” to the People Business or Spa Community because much like my thoughts on Wellbeing vs. Wellness I think it’s much more reflective of the foundational intentions of personalized service and care.

Please describe to us what you create.

My intention is to nurture an environment of positive energy, unlimited possibility and simple kindness.

What does it mean to have an entrepreneurial spirit in this industry?

To dream and be open to possibilities that are truly personal and authentic in their delivery; it’s about the how and who not necessarily the what.

Are you familiar with the E-Myth that was first published in 1986 and updated along the way

Do you think that the hospitality industry is going through an awakening? In what sense?

Otherwise, Yes and No.

COVID, Staffing, Supply Change, Guest Behavior and more are all driving change that I suppose is an awaking but it’s all largely reactive.

The push to “wellness” is always described as a trend but it’s a concept and practice that have been around since the beginning of time and done very, very well for a long time so welcome to the awakening.

Why are you excited to speak at the 2021 Boutique Lifestyle Leadership Conference by BLLA?

Throughout my career, I’ve been engaged with groups and associations that hold a special intention for the community of like minded folks who are in service to others. So when I first became aware of BLLA and it’s mission, I welcomed the opportunity to participate and contribute as a resource and certainly hope to do more in the future as it serves the members and the Association.
